$600 Million Dry Port development in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
South African private equity firms and lenders are backing the $600 million Dry Port development in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), aimed at easing congestion and improving trade flow along one of Africa’s busiest mineral corridors.
PPP agreement signing by Francois Diedrechsen, CEO of Luxus Developments (Pty) Ltd and Yellowstone project lead. The project will be operating under a 23-year concession to design, build, and operate the facility. The project is expected to significantly improve logistics and border efficiency in the region. The dry port will process up to 1,500 trucks per day transporting critical minerals such as copper and cobalt through Zambia to the ports of Durban and Maputo.
Mr. Diedrechsen, said the development is expected to reduce truck-clearance times at the Kasumbalesa border from six days to approximately four hours. He added that the project “will work on a user-pay principle that services the debt and equity,” while also generating revenue for the DRC government through a royalty-sharing structure.
The development will include warehousing, container handling zones, fuel storage facilities, and parking for up to 1,800 trucks, supporting broader efforts to modernise regional infrastructure and strengthen intra-African trade.
“There is a movement in the Southern African Development Community in cleaning up the border posts to get trade in the region to move more freely,” said Mr. Diedrechsen.
